BASIC INFO – read this before driving.
- “Ceda El Paso” you’ll see these signs just before some bridges, this means you have to stop for oncoming traffic* If clear, then go for it. Otherwise stop and wait for oncoming traffic to clear.
- “CEDA” means “yield”
If someone flashes their lights, this means police radar ahead or an accident.
Best thing to do - Don’t speed and wear your seat belt!

From Airport TO THE SOUTH PACIFIC ZONE VIA THE #34 COSTANERA HIGHWAY, and the #27 / Autopista
- From the airport - take the “Bernardo Soto”, the main highway headed west of the airport (in the direction of Alajuela), going left when exiting the airport to the main highway. If leaving from a car rental place, have them direct you to the main highway.
- Past the Dos Pinos processing plant to the Coyol intersection bridge, You will see signs for COYAL
- Go Right, do the full turn, around the overpass, to the road that takes you to the Siquiares intersection on the Ruta 27, Follow Siquires signage.
- Make a Right turn, onto Highway #27. Pay the toll at the toll booth.
- Now that you are on the #27, it is straight going for about 30 - 45 minutes or so.
- You will go through some toll stations.
The last toll booth you will go through is just before you get to the Jaco / #34 Costanera exit, and the exit is very tricky. We have missed this turn ourselves…
- You will see a gas station on your left, then go through a Blue Toll station and pay the toll. The exit is just past this toll station, right away, immediately to the right!
As you exit the toll booth area, move to the right hand lane and put your signal light on to turn right.
You will exit off Hwy. # 27, by turning to the right, going around an underpass to the left and entering onto the Costanera highway.
Follow the signage for “Jaco”.
Next, You will come to the Crocodile Bridge at Tarcoles. This is a great place to stop. You can see many Crocodiles hanging out in the river and there are some great shops. Clean bathrooms and good coffee and smoothies. etc.
Before Jaco there is a Auto Mercado – a large, wonderful grocery store, on your right as you come into the Herradura/ Jaco area. A good place to stop and get supplies. Most tourists prefer the Auto Mercado at Herradura. Clean bathrooms.
After you are drive through Jaco, you will pass Playa Hermosa – a famous surfing beach. Now you will drive through Palm Plantations and farm land.
At Quepos, you will come to a sort of "Y" intersection. Veer to the left. You will see the sign at this "Y" pointing to the left to "Dominical" and right to "Quepos". You are going to Dominical, so take the left. On the right, just before the "Y", you will see a large store called BM. It is also a great place to stop and get supplies. Clean Bathrooms.
Keep following the Costanera Highway for 45 kms, through towns, over bridges, through more Palm oil plantations.
After you pass a large Gas Station on your right at “Baru”, you will come to a checkpoint, a bridge, and a intersection. You are now are in Dominical. (Do not turn here, continue going straight through the checkpoint area, over the bridge.)
This Highway will take you to Uvita, Ojochal, Cortes, Palmar Sur and all points south.
Continue South to Uvita and Ojochal. After about 20 minutes you will arrive in UVITA.
Uvita - at this point you are about 15 minutes from Ojochal. There is another BM store here, which is the last place to stop to get supplies and it also has clean bathrooms. Please message us to tell us you are there, so we can ensure we are home to meet you, when you arrive.
About 10 minutes past Uvita, keep an eye out for the Plaza Ventana and a gas station with very large dinosaurs, on your left. Then, about 3 km further you will see a blue "El Colono" hardware store on your left, start slowing down because the road to the village is on the left immediately after the hardware store.
You will see the signs for the village of Ojochal, it is a well marked entrance off the highway to the left, immediately after the El Colono hardware store ...with a bit of a steep down hill entrance into the village.
You will cross a bridge, and pass the "Tangara Plaza" - where there is a pharmacy, great restaurant, Spa and a Belgium Beer Bar.
....keep on the main road in the village ..it is about 3 miles long.. the road is paved, has hills and curves.
You will pass the Jucaloa on your right…this is our favorite local grocery store. Keep going.
-You will soon see another small Grocery store on the left and the school on your right, a large playground/ soccer field.
.... make a left hand turn to go across the bridge. Stay on the paved road.
..up the hill...keep on coming up this main road..another couple of miles, on the pavement.
...The pavement ends at a bridge. There is signage here for "Rio Tortuga". The single lane bridge is yellow. Go over the bridge, up the rough hill and take the next left. There are signs here on a tree that says Fase 6/5 and Phase 10, and signs for Scarlet Villas and Topanga Villa, etc.
...you will pass the "Scarlet Villas" on your left ( big sign); and next you will see an intersection to the left, at a blue, painted entrance gate, with signs to Phase 5 and 10 – this is where Rita's Guest House is.
Turn left into the Phase 5 entrance, go through the black gate; and then, take the very next left, immediately after the gate. Come down about a mile until you see buildings with white roofs…that is our house.
The next entrance on the left is the guest house.
In all reality, keep making left hand turns.. and you will be here! :)
If you are confused, text us/ WhatsApp us, from Uvita, we can meet you at the pavement ends / bridge corner….and bring you up the mountain. It is simple to follow the pavement all the way, through the very windy, twisty, spread out village.
